Corpus Christi, Argentina.  Even though they are a small club, the same cannot be said regarding their ambition and work ethic.  We often hear about the work being done at the Eusko Etxea of Corpus Christi benefiting the mbyá-guaraní community.  Just over a year ago we learned of the opening of a school for children of this community that was constructed with funds managed by the club.  Now, just after the first anniversary of that opening, the Basque club is now in charge of getting drinking water to it.  “The Basque club has served as the nexus between the School of Health O’Pybo and the Cooperative for Drinking Water of San Ignacio in order to make this dream come true,” as explained from the club.

Basque Cultural Festival

Hard workers but also with a taste for a good time, these Basques from the province of Misiones are now deeply involved in the organization of the “Euskal Kulturaren Jaia – Basque Cultural Festival.”  The event will take place from July 27-29 with support from the community as well as the parish of San Ignacio.

“We are excited about getting Basques together from different places in order to share our culture with the community at large,” Olga Leicega said.  “We will have more information available next month, and are anticipating Basque friends from here and the Basque Country, and it would also make us happy to know that some clubs can come with their musicians, dancers, tamborrada, songs and joy.  Anyone wishing to perform will be received enthusiastically.  A nautical event is being planned for the Parana River, recreation for children and youth, gastronomic workshops, Basque song, and possibly a performance by a Basque choir, that our honorary member Cesar Arrondo is organized.  We would like to wish the best to our community as well as to those who visit us,” affirmed the club president.

Performance by the theatrical group Lagun Artean

As part of the festival the theater group Lagun Artean will return to the stage.  On behalf of the “Atahualpa Yupanqui” Library, the Basque club, and by popular demand the group will re-perform “El Casorio.”  The work is part of the festival program and can be seen on Saturday 28 at the Plazoleta Independencia in San Ignacio.  The company is already in rehearsal and solving problems associated with this work.

There are just over four months to go for the festivities in San Ignacio.  The club will provide hotel information soon for anyone wishing to plan a trip.
