NABO Convention, dedication of the Center for Basque Studies today in Reno as a prelude to a Basque weekend

A National Convention of NABO will kick off this morning a whole program of Basque events for the weekend in Reno, Nevada. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the First Western Festival held in Reno-Sparks in 1959; it's also the 43rd anniversary of Reno's Zazpiak Bat Basque Club; the 36th anniversary of the founding of NABO, in Reno in 1973; as well as the 30th annual NABO Convention and festival; the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the National Monumento to the Basque Sheepherder, located also in Reno; the 20th anniversary of Zenbat Gara, a Basque cultural group originated at the University of Nevada, Reno; and the 42th anniversary of the Center for Basque Studies of the UNR. The program for today includes the dedication of the new facilities of the Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada, Reno.

Reno, Nevada, USA. The North American Basque Organizations (NABO), representing about 40 Basque clubs from across the nation and Canada, will have its 30th annual convention starting at 8 pm at the campus of the UNR. After that the delegates, participants and other guests will attend the dedication at 4 p.m. of the new location on the UNR campus for the Center for Basque Studies.

Guillermo Echenique, the Basque government’s Foreign Relations General Secretary, is scheduled to attend the dedication of the 42-year-old Center for Basque Studies, previously located in the Getchell Library.

Reno, capital city of the Basque Diaspora

For three days Reno will became the capital of the Basque Diaspora, with members and representatives of Basque clubs, dance groups, singers, musicians, artists and many other participants from all over the nation, Canada and the Basque Country itself. Featuring a real Basque kabalkada (parade), performances by Basque clowns Txirri, Mirri eta Triribiton, dancers from many Basque centers...

Guillermo Zubiaga, a Basque comic illustrator based in New York will have a presentation at 3 pm, just before the dedication one hour later of the new Center for Basque Studies, located at the the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center of the UNR.

Zenbat Gara's special dance and culture performance

A Zenbat Gara's 20th anniversary special performance by Dantza Ganbara with Juan Antonio Urbeltz, and musicians Marian Arregi and Mikel Urbeltz will follow at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center, starting at 7 pm until 11pm.

The Zazpiak Bat Basque Club's 43rd annual Reno Basque Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday in Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. Saturday will beging with a Kabalkada after 10 am with dancers from many NABO Basque clubs performing a traditional suite of dances, accompanied by live musicians from the Basque Country.

Festival at Winfield Park and Tribute at John Ascuaga's Nugget

During the day, until 5 pm, food, crafts and tT-shirt vendors, dancing and contests at Wingfield Park, corner of First Street and Arlington Avenue in downtown Reno. Also all day long a bone marrow drive. People can get their cheeks swabbed and fill out paperwork that puts them in a national bone marrow database to find matches for patients in need of marrow donors. The cost is $25 or whatever amount they can afford.

On Saturday night a dinner and special tribute to the female members of the Zazpiak Bat Club will take place. Besides that, the Basque Community will also honor John Ascuaga, Carl Herrera and John Laxalt, surviving organizers of the first Basque Western Festival in 1959, at John Ascuaga's Nugget. A public dance to the music of Zpeiz Mukaki, from the Basque Country, will follow.
