Gaztemundu 2014 started yesterday in Donostia, dedicated to dance group directors in the Diaspora

Yesterday, July 6th this year’s Gaztemundu program, sponsored by the Basque Government, began in Donostia dedicated this year to the world of dance with participants coming from various Basque clubs from around the world. During two weeks, the 25 participants from Argentina, Chile, Spain, Uruguay and the US will share classes, dance rehearsals during a course coordinated by Oier Araolaza, dance expert and director of the dantzan.com website, which serves as a reference in the field.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  Jumping into the program feet first are 25 participants from Argentina (15), Spain (1), Uruguay (1), Chile (2) and six from the United States who have been in Donostia since yesterday to participate in this year’s Gaztemundu program that is solely dedicated this year to dance in accordance to the decision made at the World Congress of Basque Collectivities in 2011.

As other editions of this kind the program, given the specific theme, removed the age limit in order to participate so that directors of Basque dance groups around the world could apply.

Throughout the two weeks, July 6th – 20th, they will receive classes in theory and practice, as well as attend various outings so that they can witness dances in their native environments.

One of these field trips will take place today to Lesaka, in Navarra that just began its San Fermin festivities which also served as the topic of the first class yesterday taught by dancers from Lesaka who will perform today in Bortziraiak.

On Wednesday, the group will travel to Vitoria-Gastiez to attend the annual reception given by the Lehendakari for Gaztemundu participants.

The program is complete with contents on dances from all over the country from Bizkaia to Zuberoa, passing through Araba, Behe-Nafarroa, Lapurdi and Gipuzkoa thanks to a number of dance experts and folklore researchers from each of the areas.
