From Paris to New Orleans, Basques in the Diaspora will celebrate Aberri Eguna this Sunday

Basque communities in the Diaspora are getting ready this week to celebrate one of the major festivities: Aberri Eguna or the Day of the Basque Homeland. It is one of the events that attracts the most people, as demonstrated by the large list of activities planned all over the world: from Paris to Mexico, via New York, Madrid, Miami, Vancouver, Havana, Sydney, Caracas and New Orleans among others.

Donostia-San Sebastian. We have received news from various points in the Basque Diaspora regarding Aberri Eguna celebrations, the festivity that traditionally takes place on Easter Sunday, this year April 20th. Many Basque clubs have scheduled events on that day, even though some postpone the event to the following Sunday.  Following, a list of some of the events (Argentinean events are in a separated article).

Paris and Havana

In France, the Paris Basque club has invited everyone to celebrate Aberri Eguna this Sunday, the 20th, with a meal accompanied by music followed by a screening of the film Dans leur jeunesse il y a du passé (There is Past in their Youth) by Elsa Oliari-Ines, from Xiberua, who will also attend the screening and hold a discussion following.

In Havana, Cuba, the Basque community will gather this Sunday at a meal for the 10th year in a row.  It is expected that 200 people members and friends will attend.

Caracas and Valencia

In Venezuela, the Caracas Basque club will host the gathering also on Sunday.  The celebration will begin at 11am with mass in the main Hall of the clubhouse.  At 12:30 there will be Basque and Venezuelan hymns and the Aurresku will be performed in from of the Monument of the Gudari.  At 1pm, there will be pilota matches at the fronton “Jai-Alai” and the celebration will conclude with a meal at 3pm in the main hall.

Also in Venezuela the Valencia-Carabobo Eusko Etxea club will hold an Aberri Eguna meal, preceded by mass and Basque dance performances.

New York, New Orleans & Miami

The New York Basque club has organized a special meal to celebrate Aberri Eguna this Sunday.  The festivities will also include entertainment provided by trikitilaris “Kristina eta Kristina.”

Also in the US, the Louisiana Basque-American Society & Cultural Organization (LABASCO) has invited members and friends in the area, to a meal at the Galvez restaurant.  The event will include musical entertainment as well as a talk by founder Michel-Antoine Goitia-Nicolas on the Basque presence in the region.

The Miami Basque club will also celebrate this Sunday with a picnic at the Royal Palm Islands, place also known as Angulo Lake.  Proceeds of the event will be donated to the United for Joseba fundraiser to help Joseba Andoni Larrazabal, who suffers from developmental problems from an accident when he was only 11 months old.

Madrid & Sydney

Madrid’s Basque club will also celebrate this Sunday with a meal at the Sagardi restaurant on the second floor of the Basque club.  In Australia, the Gure Txoko Basque club in Sydney has also organized a meal that will take place at the Zilver Restaurant (Level 1, 477 Pitt St., Sydney 20000).

Mexico & Vancouver

Festivities in Mexico will be held on April 26th.  The club has invited members and friends to a traditional meal that will take place at the clubhouse starting at 2:30pm.

In Vancouver, Canada the Zazpiak Bat Basque club will also celebrate on the 26th will a meal in Burnaby.  The menu will include lasagna, cod biscayn style and rice.
