Berlin, Germany.  As part of the commemorative acts of the Bombing of Gernika, that marks its 75 anniversary this year, Berlin’s Euskal Etxea will unite art and pacifism tomorrow in a cultural event that will take place in the German capital.  The event is being supported by Berlin’s town hall as well as various local associations according to Basque club sources. 

At the event, five graffiti artists will reinterpret the legendary painting “Guernica” by Picasso; one of the iconic works of the 20 century which has become the image of the anti-war movement.  The artists – three from Gernika and two German – will create a painting on a large piece of wood that will be installed in the Donaustrasse Street in the Neukölln neighborhood.  Activities will be held there tomorrow as part of the International Day of the Child. 

The artists will work from noon until 20:00 and will be helped by children from a nearby school as well as many neighbors living in the area who want to make an artistic contribution.  “At first the idea was to translate the graffiti on a wall, but at the end it will be on a large wooden board that can be hung in different places in the neighborhood in the future.  In this way, the work will be for all those living in the neighborhood,” explained club member Unai Lauzirika to EuskalKultura.com.

“Anyone wishing to participate is invited to Donaustrasse tomorrow starting at noon to paint a piece of the mural,” Lauzirika invited.
