Donostia-San Sebastian. Aisa was born in 2004 as a course for immigrants to the Basque Country thanks to the Basque Government’s Department of Immigration, HABE and the Department for Linguistic Policy.

In 2011 it was adapted to new technologies and an online course was created, so it is now open to anyone in the world interested in learning Basque.  HABE would like to make this opportunity available to Basques in the Diaspora who don’t know Basque, or who would like to increase their knowledge of it, in a pleasurable and easy way.

What is it like?

Aisa is a beginners program that begins at a basic level.  Students do the course online, on their own, when and where they like.  It is free of charge and the exercises and lessons are in Spanish and Basque.

The course uses six characters to make the lessons more entertaining.  They are the professor Aitziber and her students Vasile, who is Romanian; Elena from Colombia, Najat and Yasmine from Marroco; and Guillaume from France (remember that the original course was for immigrants to the Basque Country). These students experience everyday life in class, at the doctor, in a restaurant…and learn how to communicate in those situations in Basque.

How to start?

To get started in Asia all you have to do is go to HABE’s: www.ikasten.ikasbil.net and choose Aisa.  This is where you will find the lessons and course materials, topic by topic.  Students can then click in each one to start.

It is not necessary to register, but anyone who would like to can so that helpful information regarding levels completed and the answers to the exercises can be accessed. To register for free, just fill out this form.
