There are a thousand different ways to learn and practice Basque and this one, proposed by a group of Euskaltzales in Boise, is definitely entertaining. Today they will get together for a “kantu-poteoa,” (Bar hopping/singing) touring the bars and Basque haunts on Boise’s Basque block all the while singing songs in Basque. Knowing the songs is not even a prerequisite to participate since all of the lyrics are printed and passed out ahead of time. You don’t even have to be a good singer according to Izaskun Kortazar, NABO’s Euskara coordinator; the only requirement is to be open to the Basque language and want to have fun. The learning is a bonus!

Boise, Idaho. A group of Basque lovers in Boise came up with an original plan that promises to be a lot of fun. They will meet at 6pm at the Basque Market and from there they will go on a “Kantu-poteo” around the Basque block, a street that has a concentration of Basque businesses including the Basque clubhouse, the museum, bars and restaurants. They will sing Basque songs but according to one of the organizers, Izaskun Kortazar, all of the lyrics will be provided in pamphlets so everyone who wants to can participate.

It isn’t even necessary to be a good singer, Izaskun added, only to want to have fun. “Learning something is a bonus.” The tour will follow this route: The Basque Market – Gernika –Lekuona – and the Basque club. Participants are required to be at least 21 years of age, the legal drinking age in Idaho. For more information on this event contact Izaskun Kortazar:
