Richard Anthony "Dick" Areitio, age 74, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at home with his wife at his side.

Dick was born in Boise on September 30, 1942 to Clemente and Angeles Marie (Echevarria Badiola) Areitio and enjoyed a colorful childhood with his fun-loving and lively Basque family in Boise.

Educated mostly in parochial school, he graduated from Boise High in 1960 and then earned degrees from Boise Junior College, Idaho State University, Southern Illinois University and University of Denver.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and particularly appreciated his time in Japan. After completing his service Dick finished his doctorate at the University of Denver and moved home to Boise where he started his Audiology practice.

He married Connie White in 1980 and they enjoyed many years of traveling, rooting for Boise State teams, golfing and socializing with good friends and being loving and supportive grandparents (Amuma and Aitxixe) to their six grandchildren.

Dick lived his life with a zest for fun. He enjoyed a large social circle and loved to share a good meal and a drink or two with his many lifelong friends, especially his best friend and older brother, Jack.

He was preceded in death by his parents Clemente and Angeles Areitio; grandparents, and his father-in-law Charles White.

Survivors include his wife Connie; brother and sister-in-law Jack and Barbara Areitio, nephews; Jon Areitio, (wife Lea, daughters Kaia and Emily) and Brian Areitio; mother-in-law Ruth White; stepdaughters and their husbands Julie and Kelly Atkinson and Jill and Tony Brandon; Connie's sister and brother and their families, Cheryl and Bob Cope and Chuck and Janean White; his goddaughter Linda House and many close cousins and friends.

He's also survived by his six grandchildren to whom he was beloved Aitxixe: J.T., Leighann, Tereyl, Sydney, Chet, Marcus and his very first great-grandson Keevin James, who he got to meet just before he passed.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 12, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Cathedral, 775 N. 8th Street, Boise, Idaho 83702. A celebratory lunch will be served to family and friends at the Basque Center immediately following the service. The family suggests donations to Euzkaldunak, The Basque Museum and Cultural Center, The Idaho Humane Society (honoring his favorite companions Winston, Daisy and Flossie), or a charity of your choice.
