Why a Lot of Idahoans Will Be Watching Next Weekend's Broadcast of 2015 Copa del Rey (Boise Weekly-n)

2015/05/24

The fluid status of one of the world's best soccer clubs may trigger a change in plans forthousands of fans who are planning to attend this summer's much anticipated Basque Soccer Friendly in Boise. Athletic Club de Bilbao finished in seventh place in Spain's La Liga season on May 23, qualifying the club to continue competing for the UEFA Europa League, a highly prized annual invitation-only competition.

Lotura: Boise Weekly

George Prentice/Boise, Idaho. Earlier this month, organizers of Boise's first-ever Basque Soccer Friendly announced that the Wednesday, June 29 match would feature Mexico's Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente and Athletic Club de Bilbao.

With Athletic Club de Bilbao's La Liga win, there's a possibility that the Boise game might need to be moved to Saturday, July 18 or Sunday, July 19.

Here are the moving parts:

If Athletic Club de Bilbao wins a match against FC Barcelona next Saturday, May 30, the Boise match would probably stay on July 29, because Athletic Club de Bilbao would pass qualifying rounds in Europe. But if Athletic Club de Bilbao does not win next weekend, the Basque Soccer Friendly will need to be moved, because the team would have to play in qualifying matches in Europe on Thursday, July 30 and Thursday, Aug. 6.

No matter what, there will be even more people—including those in Boise—cheering on Athletic Club de Bilbao next Saturday. The match will be televised on ESPN 2 at 1:30 p.m., Mountain Time.
