Boise, ID. The classes focus on basic conversation so Basque-Brazilian, who are mostly fourth and fifth generation and have lost the language through centuries, can learn the basics of their ancestries and create a connection with their relatives in the Basque Country and with Basques of the Diaspora.
Izaskun received a grant from USAC in order to study Portuguese in Florianopolis, Brazil last summer. As a result of that grant, she has been able to learn Portuguese in order to offer Basque language classes to the Basque-Brazilians. She also offered a presentation on the recovery of the Basque language during the Basque language classes and another one on The Basque Culture to an English language cultural group of Porto Alegre formed by the English teacher Claudia Etchepare.
Basques of Brazil created their Basque Cultural Association few years ago. They have formed a network among several areas where Basque live with a common goal: Recovering their Basque culture. Until now, they have worked hard on their ancestry and several families have created their own genealogy and even published two books on the topic: Alma Basca de Ana Luiza Panyagua Etchalus and O Último Saladero de Diego Irigoyen Pereira. They are also working on the history of their emigration to Brazil.
