It’s time for NABO’s fall meeting. This time delegates from around North America will gather in the small Eastern Oregon community of Ontario. The meeting will begin tomorrow, November 10th, at 8 am at Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall. Following it will be the dedication of the Ontario Basque Club’s new center. That space is located in the north wing of the century old Union Pacific Train Depot. Then the events continue to Sunday, with the Society of Basque Studies in America Hall of Fame dinner. The six honorees include Grace Lacouague Mainvil, Timotea “Timmie” Yraguen Echanis, Juanita Yraguen Ybarzabal Hoff, Martina Yraguen Echanis, Josephine Echanis Keim, and Lourana Preston Echanis.
Tomorrow, following the meeting, will be the dedication of the Ontario Basque Clubhouse. Once shared with the city’s convention center, now the Ontario Basque Center will be located in the north wing of the century old Union Pacific Train Depot. Guests are invited to be a part of the dedication and blessing. That will take place at 4pm, with no-host bar at the Fiesta Guadalajara, and that’s where Basque Socializing in its true form will take place. Then the festivies continue to Sunday November 11th, with the Society of Basque Studies in America Hall of Fame dinner.

Hororing Grace Mainvil and five more active women

On Sunday, six members of the Ontario Basque Club will be honored at the 27th annual Basque Hall of Fame of the Society of Basque Studies in America (SBSA). Those women, all members of the Ontario Basque Club, will be recognized for their years of hard work and determination to preserve Basque culture and welfare while living in America, specifically Oregon. The six honorees include Grace Lacouague Mainvil. This wonderful woman is a dedicated member of the Ontario Basque Club and Treasure of the NABO.

Timotea “Timmie” Yraguen Echanis, Juanita Yraguen Ybarzabal Hoff, Martina Yraguen Echanis, Josephine Echanis Keim, and Lourana Preston Echanis are five founders and dedicated members of the Ontario Basque Club. Their hard work has preserved the club’s existence for 60 years. Honoring these six ladies is a special event that is drawing guests from around the U.S. Various members of clubs from other states will be apart of the dedication.

Ontario Basque Club History

The Ontario Basque Club began in 1947 as an organization for Basque Ladies. Serafina Uberuaga Mendiguren told her idea to friend, Timmie Yraguen Echanis and from there their idea took off. 17 ladies made up the charter membership. According to the club’s website, their goals were to preserve Basque Culture, teach their children to sin Basque songs, dance Basque Dances and raise money for charity. It wasn’t until 1994 that men were allowed to join the women and from there the club has become what it is today: a society of Basque families from multiple generations who make up the Ontario Basque Club.
