12/01/2017 - Boise, EEUU

(August 22, 1953 - January 12, 2017)

Richard Segundo Totoricaguena (aka Totorica), 63, of Mill Creek passed away peacefully at home on January 12th, surrounded by his wife and children, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He will be remembered as a fun and loving husband, father, son, sibling, tio, cousin, and friend. Richard's magnetic smile will stay in our hearts forever.

Born on August 22, 1953 in Boise, ID, Richard was the first born child of Segundo and Serafina Totorica. He had a rich childhood growing up on a sheep ranch in the small town of Grandview, ID. He was very proud of his Basque heritage and small town upbringing. In his youth, he learned the value of hard work doing chores on the ranch. He loved hunting, water skiing, hiking, and being together with his large extended family of siblings, tias, tios, and cousins.
Richard graduated from Rimrock HS in 1971 where he excelled academically and was active in a variety of sports, still holding the shot put record to this day. He graduated from Boise State University in 1979 with bachelor's degrees in economics and business. During college, he was an avid skier, ski instructor, tennis player, and first class waiter. Richard remained a passionate supporter of his beloved Boise State Broncos and always enjoyed a trip back "home" to Boise.

Richard had a prosperous finance career until 1999 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He worked for Arthur Andersen in Boise from 1979-1986, earning his CPA and advancing to Audit Manager. This is also where he met his wife, Ann Bialek, and in 1986 they were married in Bellevue, WA. Together they moved to Portland, OR, where Richard was the Assistant Controller for Precision Castparts from 1987 to 1990. In 1990 they moved to Mill Creek, WA, where they raised their three children. Richard joined ATL (now Philips) in Bothell as Corporate Controller and was steadily promoted through the years to Vice President – Treasurer until 1999 when his career was cut short.

Richard transitioned to being a stay-at-home dad and pursued his hobbies including gardening, hiking, investing, reading, playing golf, and training his dog Toby to play the piano. He was a courageous man who overcame many struggles and adjustments throughout his journey with brain cancer, never feeling sorry for himself and always keeping a positive attitude. His legacy and loving nature will be honored forever through his family. He was immensely proud of his children, both their accomplishments and the wonderful young adults they have become. Richard was thankful for the love, care, and support provided to him by his devoted wife.

Richard was preceded in death by his father Segundo. He is survived by his loving wife Ann; children Teresa, Samuel, and Christina; mother Serafina; siblings Irene (Dr. John DeWeerd Jr.) Totorica, Miren (James) Crawford, George (Iciar Aldazabal) Totorica, Connie (Hon. Andrew) Gould, Carol (Joseph Jr.) MacHarg, and Ralph (Owena Yang) Totorica; and 25 nieces/nephews. Our deepest gratitude goes to the Totorica and Bialek families, family friend Rick Klein, UWMC, his caregivers, and Evergreen Hospice.

Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday January 21st, at 1:00 pm, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Bothell, WA. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in his memory to the American Brain Tumor Association (West Bryn Mawr Ave, Suite 550 - Chicago, IL 60631 or www.abta.org).
