Mercedes Corta Llata was born on April 20, 1921 in Ogden, Utah to Jose and Petra Corta.

She moved to San Pedro when she was 7 years old and was one of 6 siblings who lived at their parent's hotel—The Royal Hotel-- on 10th street.

She graduated from San Pedro High school in 1939 and in 1942 she married the love of her life Antonio Llata. Their son Richard was born in 1945. She began working for Bethlehem Steel and eventually retired from the Harbor Department after 25 years.

She lived in San Pedro for 90 years and always took pride in calling it home.

Mercedes was an intelligent and well-read woman who often read multiple newspapers a day from cover to cover. She enjoyed cooking for her family and no one who ate her mostaccioli will ever forget it.

She was proud of her Basque heritage and studied the country's culture and history throughout her life.

She was a member of the Mary Star Parish and was a strong believer in Christ. She donated generously to charity including ones benefitting veterans, cancer research, children's hospitals and autism. Mercedes went peacefully to be with the Lord on May 7th.

She is survived by her granddaughters Christina and Gina (Russell) Llata and her 5 great grandchildren Hayley, Brandon, Megan, Riley and Stevie Isobe. She is also survived by her nephews and nieces Jim (Priscilla) North, Paul (Karen) North, Diana (Tony) Villanueva, Lorraine (Kevin) Deneen and Lenora Stjerne and numerous great nephews and nieces. In addition she is survived by members of her extended family including Steve and Kathy Aranda, Nicholas Aranda, Natalia and Claudia D'Amato and other members of the D'Amato and Palma families.

On behalf of the family, we would like to thank the staff of the board and care home on Post Ave. in Torrance, the people at Reliance Hospice—especially the comfort care nurses. In addition, the family wants to thank Liza Linsangan who worked tirelessly to help us find caregivers to care for her at home. Finally we would like to send our thanks and love to Liza, Dora and Delia who cared for her at home in her last days.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday May 15th from 5:00pm-7:00pm followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at McNerney's Mortuary Chapel. A funeral mass will be offered on Wednesday May 16th at 10:30 am at Mary Star of the Sea. Interment will take place at Green Hills Memorial Park.
