(obituario publicado el 12 de septiembre de 2017 en Santa Cruz Sentinel, Legacy.com)

Anne Hoqui Elissondo (formerly Anne Riss), a 40 year resident of Santa Cruz area, passed away suddenly due to heart failure on Thursday the 31st of August at Dominican Hospital.

Born in 1939 in the Basque city of Ainharp, France as the daughter of Etienne & Marguerite Hoqui, Anne migrated to the U.S.A. in 1957 to live with her uncle in Danville, CA and to chase her dream of college by attending San Francisco State. While attending, she made the difficult decision to forgo her studies to assist with a family health emergency. Always putting family and others before herself, she was happy to change her plans and thus her professional career began.

Anne began work in accounting with Pacific Motor Transportation in San Francisco, and later in San Jose, then moved on to various other companies in the Santa Cruz area. After being married and living in San Mateo, California, some years later Anne and her husband plus two sons moved to Soquel, California in 1976. Upon her arrival in Soquel she became an active member of St. Joseph's Church in Capitola, California, and also began what would become over 40 years of volunteer service with various organizations throughout Santa Cruz County.

To family, friends, fellow Parishioners, Kiwanis, Elks, and Daisy members, plus all others who met her, she was known as a very kind, sincere, and caring person. Her smile was radiant, her laughter was contagious, and her love for all people brought those around her closer together. She was known as a person who enjoyed making others happy. Being Basque she was a devout catholic and very proud of her heritage, but she also embraced her new roots and was able to realize her dream of becoming an American citizen.

She is survived by her sons Grégoire and Jérôme Riss, as well as Gregoire's wife January and their daughter Alaia. In France she is survived by her sister Elisabeth Challa, brother-in-law Jean, her nieces Slyvie, Denise, Florance, Pascala, and her great nieces Aurelie, Alicia, Miren, Katixa, as well as her great nephew Ibai.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Capitola, California, on September 14th, 2017. A rosary service will be held at 9:00am, followed by a Mass at 9:30am. A reception immediately following the internment at Holy Cross Cemetery will be held at 4481 Merlin Way, Soquel, California.
