Walking around the different areas of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2016. In this one they are building a boat using Basque traditional tecniques. Historically the Basques leaded the hunt of whales, when that activity was a relevant industry in Europe - the world. The conexion of the Basques and the ocean continues nowadays. The sea has been the highway of the Basques to the world. Fish keeps being an important part of the diet of today's Basques (video EuskalKultura.com)

Starring Joaldunak from Navarre, an ancient and noisy Basque tradition visiting the US

They are from Ituren, in Navarre. The Joaldunak were walking around the Smithsonian Folklife Festival 2016, and you can see them at the DC Basque handball court, pictured answering questions about what they do, why, when and its sense within the Basque pre-Christian traditional customes. They are in their costumes just a few minutes before going back to their rhythmic walk (video EuskalKultura.com)

Trikitxa accordionist Manu Iturregi and his musician friends and dancers of Aukeran demostrating the Basque festival staple of kalejira, with the band Klaperttarrak and the Aukeran dance company. The choreography is a blend of traditional and contemporary Basque dance, using stylized traditional dress. Recorded on July 1st, 2016 (video The Kennedy Center).

Dining Basque at the US Library of Congress

At five o'clock in the afternoon, the last visitor to the Library of Congress left, and an army of half a hundred employees sneaked through the door, and in less than an hour they transformed it into a restaurant with 16 tables overlooking the Capitol. Basque chef Andoni Luis Aduriz from Errenteria was the main chef, accompanied by Bizkaian chefs Jose Miguel Olazabalaga, Txomin Gomez and Paul Ibarra. (video Deia)
