It was named after Placentia, Newfoundland, whose origin corresponds to the current Basque coastal town of Plentzia, Biscay (a few authors talk also about the town of Placencia-Soraluze in Gipuzkoa) and dates from the time Basque whalers and fishermen were pioneers in that area
