Journalist Amaia Mujika Goñi wrote in an article that the Ecuadorian parish (town) of Bilbao, in Penipe, is named in memory of the Franciscan Secundo Bilbao Arrospide, from Bermeo, who served as parish priest in the region from 1952 and is venerated by the locals "as a saint". It is an agricultural village of 350 inhabitants that suffers periodically the attacks of the Tungurahua volcano, active since 1999. It was almost buried in 2006, and it received aid of the Basque Bilbao at the request of the priest Joseba Segura and a group of mountaineers who were In the area, one of which was paradoxically called Iñigo Bilbao.
