Journalist Amaia Mujika Goñi wrote in an article that the Ecuadorian parish (town) of Bilbao, in Penipe, is named in memory of the Franciscan Secundo Bilbao Arrospide, from Bermeo, who served as parish priest in the region from 1952 and is venerated by the locals "as a saint".
