Cienfuegos, Cuba. Basque immigration to Cuba was not at all massive.  The Basques were not one of the prominent groups, but despite this in some places, like in Cienfuegos, their contribution to the economy, politics and society in the county was certainly remarkable. Basque names mark Cuban history and stand out in industries such as sugar and rum.  The Basque-Navarre Charitable Association (1877) is one of the oldest Basque clubs in the world, and its predecessor in Matanzas was the first (1868).

“The elite Basque-Navarre and their Socioeconomic Contribution to the Region of Cienfuegos in Cuba (1880-1920)”, is the title of an article published in the magazine 'University and Society’ from the University of Cineguegos in its number 11 corresponding to April-June 2019, dedicated to the bicentennial of Cienfuegos.  Its authors are Y. S. Hernández Martínez, M. Hernández García, S. García Sánchez and A. García Rodríguez.
