For the twelfth time the annual gathering of the gastronomic group “Mikeldi” was held in Mexico.  After a year full of challenges and opportunities the group gathered with its treasurer, Mikel Merodio, as the host to break bread and to define the group’s direction for 2016 as the group’s spokesperson, Julen Garritz, told EuskalKultura.com.

Mexico City, Mexico.  The group celebrated their get-together, of course, around a table with a meal that began with pintxos with anchovies, and the traditional croquettas “like grandma makes.”

Members Josu Garritz and Julen Ruiz de Azua did a pleasant and emotional remembrance “of the times we have honored our origins through food.”

The evening continued with anecdotes from the year before and proposals for the coming year.  Aitor Odriozola, with his characteristic oratory, made everyone teary eye when talking about nostalgia and the value of friendship among the Basques.

“As a gastronomic group we have inherited our grandparents taste for food, but above all and forever that for friendship,” he said emotionally.

Later Julen and Jon Andoni Ruiz de Azua started singing traditional songs including Txoria Txori, entertaining the members present.

The event ended with a toast to many more years to come with several bottles of Campillo Gran Reserva courtesy of Alvaro Mier.

The Gastronomic Group, Mikeldi, was founded in Mexico in 2003 and became official in 2005 with the idea of promoting gastronomy, good wine and friendship among its members.
