The film 80 egunean (In 80 Days) continues to surprise and this week reached a historic milestone for Basque Cinematography debuting in France in its original version in 25 theaters. The French distributor Epicentre is counting on this film by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga that can be seen in major French cities, showing in Paris, for example, in six different theaters. In iparralde it will be shown in Biarritz, Donibane Lohizune and Baiona. This presents a unique opportunity to see a film in Basque in France and above all to discover this jewel of Basque cinema that continues to conquer more and more spectators little by little.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  The film 80 egunean has been traveling the world for two years participating in hundreds of festivals.  This film that so sensitively and excitingly narrates the love story between two mature women has captivated the public and won nearly 30 awards.

The film’s debuting in 25 French theaters in its original Basque version with French subtitles is this week’s good news.  It is a historic achievement for Basque cinema as well as the film’s directors Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga who are enjoying their success to the fullest.

“It is really difficult to release a film in France because it is a very large and competitive market,” Jon Garaño explained to EuskalKultura.com.  “We should also emphasize that the film premiered very well there with 25 copies, when for example it only opened with 14 in the Basque Country and 16 in Spain.” In Paris it can be seen in six theaters.

This is the first film to be released in France in Basque and after showing in theaters will be made available on DVD by its distributor Epicentre.  The film was also released in countries like Norway and Poland, albeit at a more modest level, and is pending release in theaters in Sweden.

- 80 egunean can currently be seen at the Sélect in Donibane Lohizune and the Cine Royal in Biarritz.  Starting July 4 it will be at the Atalante Theater in Baiona.  To check theaters and show times in major French cities go here
