Five hundred four books, articles and works in Basque, Spanish, Franch and English by Intxausti (Segura, Gipuzkoa, 1934) have now been digitized and made available online.  Including basic resources and references in relation to the social history of Euskera and the religious history of Euskal Herria.  The terminology is also a field that has received important contributions from this honorary member of Euskaltzaindia since 1004.  Sixty years of work that continues since Intxausti continues his relevant research today, without retiring.

Efe/Donostia-San Sebastian.   The work of the Basque historian and scholar, Joseba Intxausti, is now available by simply clicking online, thanks to the digitization that was done by the Jakin Foundation of 504 of this works, the result of six decades of activity by this intellectual of the generation of 56.

In all there are 11,684 pages from 36 books, 103 fragments and 365 articles on various themes ranging from religion, social history and Basque terminology that are now available on Jakin’s website: https://www.jakin.eus/intxausti.

The director of Jakin, Lorea Agirre, presented the work this week along with Paulo Agirrebaltzategi, Joxe Azurmendi and Joan Mari Torrealdai, historic members along with Intxausti himself of the magazine in Basque created in 1956 and the which the academic “re-founded” in the 70s when he took over its direction.

The digitization of Intxausti’s work is the second done by the Jakin Foundation through an agreement of collaboration with the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa after the one carried out on the works of Joxe Azurmendi.

Born in Segura in 1936, Intxausti studied in Arantzazu and that the Seminary in Olite-Erriberri where he studied philosophy and took his first steps in Basque cultural activity through the magazine “Gure izarra.”

Intxausti is considered one of the leaders in the study of social history and religion in the Basque Country as well as a researcher on Basque terminology, a field in which he promoted the creation of the center on Terminology and Lexicography (UZEI).

One of his major contributions was his position in favor of the unification of Euskera because he believed that a modern society required a modern Basque language, a thought that he communicated in the article “Illobira bultzaka” (Pushing towards the Tomb) that was published in 1957 and provoked a huge polemic among those considered “purists” who were against this renovation.

He also directed and coordinated several cultural projects like the “Euskal Herria Encyclopedia” from 1984-1985, the White Book by Euskaltzaindia as well as the collection of biographies Bidegileak.

The digitation carried out by Jakin spans through Intxausti’s latest work published in the Aranzazu magazine last October entitled, “Musulmanak Europan” (Muslims in Europe).

In his speech at the presentation ceremony held at the Koldo Mitxelena Center in Donostia, Intxausti wanted to clarify “his mania” for addressing the religious issues in his intellectual journey despite the fact that it is “no longer interesting to society.”

Intxausti who was himself a Franciscan and who has not lost his contact with the Franciscan community and the religious world, is recognized as a defender of the laic society, but also explained that religion has been very important in Basque history and “This cannot be forgotten.”

In fact he also said that he is working on a project on Judaism in the Basque Country.

Mila esker Joseba Intxausti eta Zorionak, zuri eta guri!
