The city suffered some of the most serious floods in its history, in mid-March, and its streets still reflect the damage done by the storm.  Although very slowly, the city is beginning to recuperate its normal rhythm. At a time when they are grateful for happy moments and normalcy, the local Basque club celebrated its 94th anniversary and regaled a hundred guests with fine dining and a dance performance. 

Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina.   2017 is not being an easy year for this city; but its institutions, including the Euskal Echea Association, have joined forces with the community in containment and an attempt to return to normalcy.  In this context the Basque club presented its 94th anniversary program of activities that will run through the end of the year.  On June 24th they will celebrate San Juan along with communities from Asturias, Galicia, Andalucía and Portugal; in July they will celebrate San Fermin and at the end of the month, San Ignacio.  In September, members will represent the community at the Festival of Collectivities and to end the year, on October 28th, they will host a dinner and gathering that will also be attended by Mikel Ezkerro who will give a talk.

The Comodoro Rivadavia Euskal Echea Basque Club celebrated its 94th anniversary last Saturday, May 20th, at the clubhouse with 110 people attending.  Club president, Hector Baztan was in charge of welcoming remarks followed by dinner, prepared by club sukaldaris, Santiago and Ignacio Baztan and Edu Vergel.

The club’s Queen Candidate for the Festival of Collectivities was also introduced.  The honor feel to Lorena Zuluaga, who at the age of 22 has been active in the club for 18 of those years.  When it was time to dance all the groups, txikis, intermediates and youth part of Haize Dantzariak took to the floor.  They even encouraged their parents to take to the floor, as well as members of the adult dance group.  At the end of the performance, all the dancers joined together to do a Fandango.  The festivities ran through then night in a wonderful festive atmosphere.

Other Activities

One thousand eight hundred eighty kilometers from the nation’s capital, it is difficult for residents of Comodoro Rivadavia to participate in many activities. That is why the Euskal Etxea is committed to attend the meeting of Patagonian Basque Clubs that aims to support regional proposals.  The Comodoro Basque club was at the last meeting held in Neuquen and will also attend the next one in September in Viedma y Patagones.

Members of Haize Dantzariak are also hoping to attend Semana Vasca in San Nicolas and have started working to make that possible.
