The International Day of the Basque Language began wonderfully for the Berlin Basque club that was awarded the 2014 ENE Saria.  Eusko Ikaskuntza, the Society of Basque Studies made the announcement this morning recognizing the club’s efforts in the diffusion of the Basque language and culture in the German capital, highlighting its creativity and modernity in done so. In the coming hours, Euskera Day non-stop activities will begin in the Basque Country and the Diaspora.  Ospatu eta gozatu! Celebrate and have fun!

Donostia-San Sebastian.  Eusko Ikaskuntza anounced this morning that the ENE Saria 2014 was for the Berlin Basque club, Gernika Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein.  The award aims to highlight the efforts of entities that work in favor of Euskera outside of the Basque country, with this being its 9th edition.  This time, there were 12 nominees, and the jury decided chose to feature the work done by the Berlin Basque club.

This Basque club was founded in 1997 as the Gernika Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein Association whose goal was to remember the Bombing of Gernika and promote friendship between Basques and Germans.  It was officially recognized by the Basque Government in 2009.

The club teaches Basque classes in Berlin, and promotes the Basque culture through various activities: conferences, talks, concerts, film series, tributes, book presentations, festival, courses, workshops and social activities.  The ENE jury highlighted “its innovative and creative contribution” when carrying out these activities.

Celebrations in the Basque Country and online

Eusko Ikaskuntza created the International Day of the Basque Language in 1947, primarily for exiles and the Basque community abroad, but since then, it has spread and today is celebrated also throughout the Basque Country.  In the coming hours, the majority of Basque communities will carry out some kind of activity related to the celebration.  For example, it will be a special day at IkaMizka, where they hope to support Basque between youth organized by the Town Hall in Donostia.  The Provincial Government of Bizkaia has also presented its awards yesterday, the Lauaxeta 2014, and today it will support celebrations in Bizkaian communities along with EUDEL.

There are also interesting initiatives online like on EITB who has created a world map of Euskera that maps people who Tweet #eusgara. In addition, ETB will also debut the documentary Euskera Munduan tonight.

Barcelona’s Basque club has also joined in on social media and will raffle an attractive prize among those who tweet #euskaraviu or who leave a message on their Facebook page; a fun and interactive way to show that Basque is very much alive.
