Santiago, Chile. After more than a dozen years as club president, Jose Maria Narvarte Arregui announced that he would not run for re-election, “to the dismay of those in attendance due to his excellent management of the club,” club sources said.  The General Assembly of the Euzko Etxea included election of a new president and four directors with Ignacio Bastarrica Molina taking over who have previously served as the club’s vice-president as well as president in 2004.

Luis Ignacio Bastarrica Molina works in marketing and has a long career in the Euzko Etxea.  Besides serving as the 2nd vice-president, Bastarrica is also a member of the Chile Basque Choir and director of the virtual magazine “Berriketari,” the club’s bulletin.  He also has an artistic side as a musician, author, composer and performer, director and first voice in the “Los Huasos Hidalgos,” group that sings Chilean folk music.  He is married to Maria Angelica Carrasco Vero, editor of Berriketari and president of the “Itxaropen Gaztea” dance group that is also part of the Euzko Etxea.

Jose Maria Narvarte Arregui, current president, has served in this capacity for some 12 years, even if his family and personal connection and commitment, goes much further back than that.  Both his mother’s and father’s families were significant in the Chilean Basque Diaspora.  At one time, Jose Maria was the president of the Euzko Etxea in Santiago, while his brother Javier, residing in the US, was that of the Zazpiak Bat Reno Basque Club in Nevada.  Both are sons of Cástor Narvarte Sanz, philosopher and intellectual in the Basque Diaspora originally from Irun.

The Euzko Etxea of Santiago current board of directors for 2019-2020 is comprised of the following:

-President: Ignacio Bastarrica Molina
-1er Vice-president: Iñaki Narvarte Larrondo
-2° Vice-president: Michel Sallaberry Ayerza
-Treasurer: Jorge Oyarzún Kejaya
-Pro-treasurer: Juan Mendiburu Azcárraga
-Secretary: Zita Solas Aranzábal
-Pro-secretary: María Angélica Cofré Urroz
-Librarian: Pedro Oyanguren Cabrer
-Director: Carlos Gurruchaga Solas

Our best wishes!
