A delegation from the Basque Government lead by the Minister of Housing, Iñaki Arriola and the Secretary General of Foreign Action, Guillermo Echenique, will be in New York this Monday to receive the United Nations’ Public Service Award for 2012. The United Nations is recognizing the participatory project "In housing, all opinions count,” promoted during this legislative term by the Housing Department of the Basque Government. This award is the most prestigious international recognition worldwide for excellence in public service. The ceremony will take place at the United Nations headquarters.

New York, NY.  The Basque minister of Housing, Public Works, and Transportation, Iñaki Arriola, will receive the first award of distinction UNPSA for Public Service from the United Nations at its General Assembly headquarters in recognition of its “In housing, all opinions count,” project.  Arriola will attend along with the General Secretary of External Action, Guillermo Echenique, and a small delegation from the Basque Government.

The Basque project was chosen out of 471 other projects in various fields.  This number is a 58% increase from last year’s nominations.  The jury felt that the Basque Government’s project has contributed to improving the public service offered by the Basque Administration and serves as an inspiration for future projects.

The process, “In housing, all opinions count,” has contributed to the participation of citizens in this area and has also been a valuable process for thousands of people who have participated in the same according to Basque Government sources.  For this reason, the Department has recently initiated a new process of citizen participation in order to improve the system of housing allocation and service Etxebide.

Apart from the ceremony, on June 25 and 26, they will participate in a conference in New York to analyze and debate the public sector’s contributions to good governance.  This conference will be directed by the President of the UN and will include the participation of senior leaders from entities worldwide.  As part of this conference, the Basque Government will have an opportunity to display, explain, and debate its participative project with the rest of those attending the workshops.
