Various initiatives have been taking place throughout the year to mark the 500 years since the invasion and the conquest of Navarre by Castilian troops, both in Navarre as well as in the Diaspora. These activities have been different in character with some being official recognizing the historical process of the formation of the Spanish State that are tinged by the loss of independence of Navarre. In Argentina, Pedro Mauregui Larranda, president of the Zingirako Euskaldunak in Chascomus informed of the commemoration this afternoon at the clubhouse with a screening of “Navarre the Conquest,” followed by historical context provided by Cesar Arrondo.

Donostia-San Sebastian. Various activities and programs including conferences and other have been planned in Basque clubs and collectivities all over the Diaspora, to commemorate the 1512 invasion and conquest of Navarre by troops led by King Ferdinand of Aragon, later known as Ferdinand The Catholic.  This conquest would put an end to the independence of the Kingdom of Navarre

The commemoration is both highlighting the invasion as part of a process leading to Navarre joining the current Spanish State “opening new prospects of progress in relation to all of Spain as well as territories in the Americas,” with programs sponsored by the Government of Navarre that include programs such as the one of the Navarrese Center in Zaragoza, that is linking this event with the eight hundredth anniversary of the battle of “Las Navas de Tolosa” (1212); or as a denounce of  “that act of force that ended the otherwise flourishing and independent nation and kingdom Navarre was.” In the Diaspora, a call was made among others for this afternoon at 7:00pm at the Basque clubhouse in Chascomus, Argentina with the screening of the film '1512 Navarre: the Conquest' as a part of the denounce of "that conquest process that follows today with non-stop attacks to the Basque language, identity and culture"; in the web by Askatasunaren Bidea of San Miguel, also from Argentina; or by FEVA (Federation of Basque Entities in Argentina) “whose membership is largely made up of descendants of Navarre from both sides of the Pyrenees,” as refers by its president, Ricardo Basterra whose family also comes from Navarre.
