The Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea has proposed two important goals for 2017: the organization of an International Meeting of Basque Clubs, with the participation of clubs in Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile; and the consolidation of the Bodega Harriague Cultural Space.  Besides these, the Basque club has already begun its activities with Euskera and a talk on the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika.

Salto, Uruguay.   After a well-deserved summer rest, the Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea Basque Club has begun its new course inviting anyone interested in learning Basque from zero, as well as those who are already students but who need a refresher to classes that will begin in March. The first meeting took place last Friday, thanks to the teacher from Montevideo Leonat Egiazabal who on his first trip this year to Salto also gave a talk on the 80th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika.

Entitled, “Gernika. A Look at these 80 Years,” Egiazabal provided an interpretation of the Bombing looking “to go beyond Picasso’s painting.  That is to say to see Gernika as more than a synonym of Peace,” Luis Zaldua, Salto club president explained to EuskalKultura.com.  “The goal of the talk was to show the historic facts as they are, the genocide committed against the Basque people, a symbol of democracy, liberty, and the fight against Nazism and Fascism, something that many may not know about.”

Zaldua also indicated that with the 80th anniversary of the Bombing in 2017 they “are preparing the atmosphere for activities that they will carry out in this regard at the Harriague Cultural Space in April.  Although there are still many details to tie up, but for sure they are counting on the attendance of the Aldaxka Kultur Biltzarra from Montevideo and the Basque clubs who are members from the 21st Century at the Meeting of Uruguayan Basque Clubs,” Zaldua said.

In regards to activities planned for the Bodega Harriague Cultural Space, Zaldua explains that one of the club’s biggest challenges this year is to consolidate this recovered space and give continuity to the undertaking whose main goal is the diffusion of the Basque culture.

International Meeting of Basque Clubs

In this sense, another big Project that the Saltoko Euskadunen Taldea Basque Club has this year is to concretize and organize an “International Basque Club Meeting, with regional reach to which representatives from Basque clubs in Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile would be invited".  "When we were in Necochea during Semana Vasca we talked about the idea with representatives of various Basque clubs and we are already in touch, so, if all goes well, we will hold this regional meeting in May.” Zaldua assures.  “As our activities are confirmed, we will let you know,” he concluded.
