The recently formed trio is starting to be known on local stages and tomorrow, Thursday, June 21st they will perform at the Facundo Cabral Hall at the Celta Bar.  “Indarra Trio,” isn’t just a Basque name, but German Arriazu, euskaltzale and Basque speaker is preparing Basque Country music classics to include in its repertoire.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   “Indarra Trio,” is comprised of Rocio Espinoso, cello; Sergio Martellotti, clarinet; and German Arriazu, on the guitar, accordion and piano.  Even if they are described as a chamber ensemble, they do so “with a popular touch,” Arriazu explains, graduate from the National University of the Arts and composer of most of the works that they will perform at this concert.

When asked about the choice of the group’s name, the guitarist affirmed that it was a group decision, although the inspiration came from the heart of his own home.  “I have a son that we named Indar Urdin.  Indar is with us when we practice at home and my fellow musicians liked his Basque name that means strength.  That is why we decided to call ourselves “Indarra Trio.”  Besides the name also takes into account the universality of our repertoire that includes traditional Basque pieces by Aita Donostia for example and a segment of the concert will be “tributes,” and also some of my own compositions like a Zortziko that I’m working on.”

Much more than a Basque name

For German, the connection to Euskal Herria doesn’t end with names.  According to him, “my great-grandfather, Julio Arriazu, was from Nafarrroa born in Murchante, who came to Argentina when he was 5 in 1905.  In our family, we have always valued Basque, the culture from Euskal Herria and above all the language, that without speaking it, they named and knew some words.  They were proud of Euskera.  I have always had in mind, finding it.  One day in Buenos Aires I went to Euskaltzaleak.  When I entered for the first time, I heard people speaking and it made me want to cry.  Therefore, I immediately began studying.  Today I can converse in Euskera and I speak to my son in Basque,” he confesses.

-Indarra Trio will perform tomorrow, June 21st in the Celta Bar in Buenos Aires (Sarmiento 1702), at 9pm, in the Facundo Cabral Hall.  To RSVP call 115 471 2308.  The trio is also on Facebook: Indarra Trío. Their next concert will be on July 14th at the HabitArte Cultural Center in San Telmo, Buenos Aires.
