Buenos Aires, Argentina.  According to the organization, “Chapter of the Argentine Conference for Peace in the Basque Country,” this is “a milestone in the Peace Process in the Basque Country that will be made at a conference to be held in Argentina on December 4.”

The announcement says that “the Basque society wants and needs to put an end to the armed conflict and in order to do so need the French and Spanish states to meet and address the consequences of the conflict and become firmly involved in a path of dialogue for peace that includes the issue of victims and gives viability to the disarmament of ETA.  It also invites addressing the situation of political prisoners.”

All political parties in Argentina are invited, along with human rights groups, civil society collectives, professional associations, intellectuals and public personalities to sing the document for peace that will contribute “to the end of 50 years of armed conflict in the Basque Country.” In regards to the document, it concludes that “there are no excuses or obstacles that can might be argued as insurmountable in the way of constructing a lasting peace in Euskal Herria,” and calls all stakeholders to join the effort in this regard.

The event will take place on December 4, at 16:00 in the Senate’s Blue Room – Congress of the Argentine Nation, where an Aurresku will be performed and the Euskaltzaleak choir will sing a part of its repertoire in Basque.  Besides members of the Basque community there will also be members of the community at large, senate members, and representatives of the International Group of Contact; Paul Rios, from the Social Movement for Dialogue “Lokarri,” and Adolfo Perez Esquivel from the Service for Peace and Justice “Serpaj” in Argentina.

To date various political parties from the national and provincial political spectrum, have pledged their commitment including members of the FPV, UNEN, GEN, Libres del Sur, Unidad Popular and Proyecto Sur.  As well as prominent figures of culture, human rights organizations, civil society and referents and institutions of the Basque Diaspora, including the Federation of Basque Entities in Argentina (FEVA) and Basque clubs in the city of Buenos Aires as well as those in the interior of the country.

This appeal has close antecedents in Uruguay’s Meeting for Peace in the Basque Country that took place in June in Montevideo, and the Continental Conference of Mexico 2013, both a result of the Conference for Peace in Aiete, celebrated in Donostia in 2011.
