The first activity as part of the agreement will be the participation of Iñaki Bazan, History Professor and Dean of the College of Humanities at the University of the Basque Country, in the International Conference of Medieval studies organized by CONICET.  After the conference, Bazan will also teach a course on “Religious Dissent in the Medieval Basque Country.”  Both activities are aimed at university students and specialists and will take place at the CONICET headquarters.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   The agreement between the National Council of Scientific and Technical Investigations (CONICET) and the Etxepare Basque Institute was signed in 2015 in hopes of “facilitating the mutual benefit of academic exchange and scientific and technological cooperation between both institutions.”  With this in mind, the joint activities between the organizations will begin to crystalize this year, specifically with the visit of the Dean of the College of Humanities and Professor of Medieval History at the University of the Basque Country, Iñaki Bazan.

As part of this agreement, Bazan will fulfill two important commitments during his stay in Argentina.  On the one hand, he will deliver a plenary speech at the International Conference of Medieval Studies that CONICET organizes every two years.  Entitled, “The Judicial System of the Bizkaian Lordship in the Middle Ages,” the conference will take place on September 6th at 4:15pm.

After the conference, he will then teach a class on “Religious Dissent in the Medieval Basque Country.”  This will take place on September 8th and will be organized in two blocks, the first from 10am-12pm, and the second from 2pm-4pm.  The conference as well as his class with be held at CONICET (Saavedra 15, Buenos Aires).  Both events are especially aimed at university students and specialists.

Agreement between CONICET and the Etxepare Basque Institute

In regards to the agreement, and as Dr. Pablo Ubierna, one of the main supporters of the initiative, explained to EuskalKultura.com, “we are already underway, and now we will begin to organize specific activities, in this specific case, the visit of Iñaki Bazan.  The general idea is to institutionalize Basque Studies as an academic discipline in the scientific university system in Argentina.  And so that people who include Basque topics as part of their professional research as doctorate fellows (and eventually degree seekers); can do so in a broader thematic spectrum.”

“The idea is that when researchers come to do research that they can be directed towards Basque.  What is interesting for CONICET is that it can welcome researchers from public or private universities, and in addition, even if the original agreement originated in the Multidisciplinary Institute of History and Human Sciences in CONICET (in Buenos Aires) that it continues to channel the efforts following the agreement signed with all of CONICET included as an institution and its national coverage,” Ubierna explained.
