Warsaw, Poland.  Basque film, poetry and music will have a special place these days in Poland thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute and the Basque language and culture lecturers at the universities of Warsaw, Poznan and Gniezno.  This “Basque Spring” was organized with the collaboration of Warsaw’s Cervantes Institute. 

Events will begin tomorrow with a selection of short Basque films from the Kimuak program that will be shown at the MUZA Theater in Poznan (at 6:30pm).  The films are Topeka (Asier Altuna, 2002), Choque (Shock) (Nacho Vigalondo, 2005), The Cow (Gorka Esteban, 1998), War (Luiso Berdejo, Jorge C. Dorado, 2005), Two Meetings (Alan Griffin, 2004), Daisy Cutter (Enrique García, Rubén Salazar, 2010), The Dreamer (Oskar Santos, 2004) and Hauspo soinua (Inaz Fernández, 2000). The day after tomorrow, they will be shown at the University of Gniezno (11:00am) and on April 19 at the Cervantes Institute in Warsaw (7:00pm).

Poetry and Music tour

The “Basque Spring” will also bring poetry and music with a tour by writers Harkaitz Cano and Rikardo Arregi.  They will be accompanied by translator, Barbara Stawicka and musicians, Jabier Muguruza and Mikel Azpiroz.  Muguruza has put Cano’s and Arregi’s texts to music on his last album Bikote Bat (One Couple).

The first performance will take place on April 16 at the University of Warsaw (11:30am).  On the same day, in the afternoon (6:30pm) they will perform a recital entitled “Basque Poetry Today” at the Cervantes Institute in Warsaw.  On April 17 they will perform their poetry-musical show at the Czuly Barbazynca bookstore (7:00pm).

The following events will take place in Poznan, on April 19: at 1:15pm there will be a translation workshop and a lecture at the Adam Mickiewicz University, in the afternoon at 7:00pm, a concert-recital in the cafeteria Sekret.  Concluding the tour, the final performance will be at Gniezno’s Cultural Center, on April 20 at 6:00pm.
