The intense rains registered lately in Chile and Peru have caused a series of landslides which have left the Peruvian region of Lima under a state of emergency, specifically the towns of Chosica and Huarochiri, and Atacama, in Chile.  The Basque community in Chile and the Basque club in Lima have both started campaigns to help and support those affected.

Donostia-San Sebastian.   The Basque club in Valpariso Chile let us know about a solidarity campaigns supported by the Basque community in Chile to help those affected by the serious floods in the area of Atacama.

According to a letter sent by Archibaldo Uriarte, Chile’s club president, “As Basques and in solidarity, mainly with Chile who welcomed so many Basques with open arms at different times, when they were suffering from problems of different kinds,  it is time to repay that welcome and so we ask you to help support those affected in Northern Chile.”

The call is aimed at all members of the community, as well as business and Basque entities in Chile and the world.  In the case of the Euskal Etxea in Valparaiso, the person in charge is Amaia Ortega Goitia, Basque and culture teacher.  Direct all questions to amaia.eus@outlook.es, or call 56977828087.  You can also email the club: vascovalpo@entelchile.net.

Also in Peru

The Basque community in Peru is also mobilizing to help their neighbors, who are very close in this case, in Chosica and Huarochiri, areas that have been devastated by landslides, and are only 30 kilometes from Lima.  The group of youth Legaz (Limako Euskal Gazteria) has begun to gather food (water, rice, milk…) and clothing at the Euskal Etxea in Lima (Av. La Reserva Nº 297, Miraflores).
