The Basque community is experiencing two major events in a very short time. On the one hand, the 5th World Congress of Basque Collectivities just concluded, while on the other side of the Atlantic the 2011 National Basque Week celebration began yesterday in Necochea, Argentina. As every year, this edition will bring Basque club members and friends together to celebrate the culture, history and politics of the Pyrenean country. The rich program, that includes dance performances by local dance groups, concerts, lectures, exhibits and tributes will also include performances by the Aukeran Dantza Taldea and the Drindots, both came from the Basque Country expressly to participate in this year’s Semana Vasca.

Necochea, Argentina.  It’s already here, no need to wait any longer.  Necochea’s Euzko Etxea held the first day of Semana Vasca 2011 yesterday.  Even though it is a party, one of the largest gatherings in the Diaspora, it also serves as a time to remember those who have gone before us.  That is why on Monday afternoon during the inauguration and the raising of the Argentinean flag and the Ikurriña in front of the center, Maria Julia Ercoreca was remembered.  This small ceremony honoring a pioneer in the world of Basque dance in the country served to open the Semana Vasca 2011 with the participation of Basque Government officials and Argentinean institutions such as Julian Celaya, Elvira Cortajarena and Ricardo Basterra among others.  Following is the complete program:
