“Science and Exile,” will be the focus of the Hamaikabide Elkartea Association’s upcoming XV Conference that will be held November 7-11 in Donostia.  This association, whose focus is research and diffusion in the area of exile in 1936, invites anyone wishing to participate or contribute papers, to email hamaikabide@gmail.com by July 1st.

Donostia-San Sebastian.   The note received from Hamaikabide Elkartea indicates that the theme of this year’s conference will be, “science, one of the main work lines that is often ignored in thematic exile studies.  The intention is to retrieve and analyze the legacy of science and of the handbooks in the geographies of exile,” they say.

“There are many names that can compose a list that, despite its extension, too many times remains in the shadows, from Julian Ajuriagerra to Alfredo Lagunilla; from Jose María Bengoa to Vicenta Llorente, or Justo Garate to Ricardo Urgoiti.  As at previous conferences we are interested in everyone, those from the Basque Country, as well as any other peninsular territory, nationalists, republicans, communists, socialists…or simply scientists that refused to live and work in a country under a dictatorial regime, or children who were forced to live in exile, and who developed their professional lives in any of the aforementioned areas,” they say.

So, from November 7-11 in Donostia-San Sebastian, they propose the study of these men and women who have been distinguished for their dedication and their conquests in the areas medicine, psychiatry, biology, mathematics, economics, physic, chemistry, engineering, or architecture.  The conference called “The International Conference on Science and Exile (1936-1960),” will be held at the Conference Hall at the Karlos Santamaria Library at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU).

The deadline to present papers is July 1st.  All papers should focus on biographies and works of exiled scientists. “It should therefore talk about biographical aspects (they need to be otiginal and new), contributions, and advances of those exiled from the Republic.”
