Sixteen teams participated in MercoMus that was held in Montevideo.  The trophy however could only go to one team, and this time it traveled to Argentina to the team from Mar del Plata, Juan González and Luis Mari Vicente.  Both the hosting club, Euskaro Basque Club and the participants were very satisfied with how the tournament went, and now Uruguay is getting ready to host world Mus in 2020.

Montevideo, Uruguay.  The 11th edition of MercoMus was held April 11-15, with five countries participating, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Peru and Uruguay.  After its inauguration, two intense days of games ensued, along with opportunities of touring the city. The awards ceremony was part of the farewell dinner, on the last night.  In regards to the results, the team from Mar del Plata Juan González and Luis Mari Vicente, came in first followed by a team from Peru, Juan José Meneses and Xabier Gil Hernández.  Third and fourth place went to Rolando Biasco and José Luis Machi from La Plata (Argentina), and Juan Carlos Lago and Juan Mendiburu from Chile, respectively.

According to event organizers, “at the farewell dinner, as throughout the tournament, the weather was wonderful and so accompanied the celebration and camaraderie.  The muslaris were welcomed with an Aurresku and at the closing dinner there was no lack of Basque dance and song.”  As a token of thanks, visitors were presented gifts by their hosts.

Lucia Goñi, Euskaro Basque Club reference, told EuskalKultura.com that “these were wonderful days filled with camaraderie and fraternity among the delegations.  Among the muslaris, delegates and companions there were some 60 people in attendance.  It was an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties, that often occurs at each tournament, and to demonstrate that the tradition of the Basque game is still strong,” Goñi explained, who also noted that the general organization of the event was carried out by the club’s board of directors, in collaboration with the National Commission of Mus represented by Julio Garcia Denis, its main reference.  “The tournament was a complete success.  A really good base for World Mus 2020 in Uruguay,” she concluded.
