There has been conversation for some time regarding the possibility of a direct flight between Miami and Bilbao, something that until now has not been realized. This seems to be the moment, and supporters are working to push the idea forward. On May 20th, a representative of the Miami International Airport met with the Basque club, seeking to enlist the support of the local Basque community. The club’s vice-president, Boni Guenetxea, asked all members and supporters of the idea to attend this important event.

Miami, USA. Miami’s Basque club, Txoko Alai, hosted Ernesto Rodriguez, representative of the Miami International Airport, at a meeting to gain support from the Basque community of Florida for the project to connect this airport to Bilbao’s. Guenetxea explained to EuskalKultura.com that "conversations have taken place regarding linking the two airports,” conversations where Senator Javier Souto played an important role along with the Chamber of Commerce of Bilbao.

The purpose of the meeting was to create interest and support that will result in a weekly direct flight from Miami to Bilbao in the summer, a flight that would link the Basque Country as a whole. Sources from the Basque club feel that the cooperation of the local Basque community may be important to the project, which would also facilitate increased U.S. tourism to Euskal Herria.

Another meeting will take place in June to delve deeper into the issue.
