This year the Paris Euskal Etxea will make a mark on Carnival with a parade through the streets led by Basque mythological characters like the Lamina and Basajaun. They have been working hard for weeks at the club, in a creative workshop that is taking shape, little by little. Next Sunday, March 2nd they will run the streets of the city in a parade, from the Place Gambetta to the Place de la Republique. The club invites everyone to join in and leave a Basque mark on the Parisian Carnival.

Paris, France. The Basque club in Paris will parade on March 2nd with a festive group led by two giant figures that of the Lamina and the Basajaun, dancers and musicians from the Gazteria group along with singers from Gernika’s choir.

A group of club members has been working for weeks in a creative workshop that takes place on Saturdays at the club.  The group has gathered recycled materials, with which, little by little, they are creating giant versions of the Lamina and the Basajaun. The group has created a Facebook page where you can follow their progress, step by step.

Ikurrina in the Gambetta Plaza

The club invites everyone who wishes to join in the parade and enjoy the carnival with a Basque touch.  Anyone wishing to participate needs to be at the Place Gambetta by 1pm, on March 2nd and approach the group with the Ikurrina.

The parade will begin around 2pm and will end around 6:30 at the Place de la Republique, where the festivities will continue until 9pm.  Organizers invite everyone to come in costume according to the festivals theme:

  • Basajaun or Basandere: men and women of the forest with big heads, beard, dressed in animal skins and like herders, with flowers and branches in their hair.  Characteristic colors are black, green and brown.
  • Lamina, mythological water characters, human with duck feet, or half human and half fish.  Characteristic colors: blue or blue green.

Anyone not wishing to dress up can have their faces painted or can wear a scarf that will be given to them.  In this case, it is necessary to let the club know of your participation before February 22nd via email: ihauteria@eskualetxea.com.
