Invited by Gure Esku Dago, and with the city’s support, nearly 50 seamstresses gathered on Saturday at the Palza Moreno in La Plata to participate in “Ehuntze Eguna” (Fabric Day).   This is the scene repeated in other localities in Argentina and throughout the Diaspora.  A large cloth with messages in favor of the right to decide will travel, in La Plata’s case, to the capital on May 10th to be part of “Buenos Aires Celebrates,” and later on to Euskal Herria to join in the “Erabakia Ehuntzen  - Time to Weave our Will,” on June 21st.

La Plata, Argentina.   The invitation from Gure Esku Dago this year was very well received in the Diaspora including in Argentina and Uruguay where nearly 20 Basque clubs have sent their messages and fabric squares to La Plata so the seamstresses can united them.  The expressions in favor of the right to decide are manifested in various formats: drawings, flags, phrases, symbols….”but always with the same message of unity and liberty,” as organizers explained to EuskalKultura.com.

The “Ehuntze Eguna – Fabric Day” took place in the Plaza Moreno in front of the Town Hall on Saturday the 25th starting at 11am.  Taking advantage of the good weather, nearly 50 seamstresses and tailors gathered to complete their messages and to unite all of them in a large piece of fabric and give shape to the Argentine-Uruguayan Diaspora.  Among those present were the Mayor, Pablo Burera, who was accompanied by the Sub-Secretary of Communities, Mauricio Castro who also included his will on some of the fabric squares.  The local Casal dels Paisos Catalans (Catalan Club) also participated.

Throughout the day, in addition to their sewing, there was lunch, music and dancing as well as an exhibition game by the blind soccer players from the Euzko Etxea.

The result of this day of work will be exhibited at “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” (a large festival sponsored by the city of Buenos Aires), on May 10.  There ones that didn’t make it to La Plata will also be incorporated.  Afterwards, “the La Plata contribution will travel to the Basque Country to join thousands of messages that will be formed into the shape of ballot boxes on June 21 in one of the main soccer stadiums in the Basque Country,” organizers concluded.
