Iruña-Pamplona, Navarra. The Minister of Citizen and Institutional Relations of the Government of Navarre, Ana Ollo, stressed the assets that citizens living outside of Navarre suppose.  She did so before one hundred individuals who live outside of Navarre who attended the 1st Next Gathering last Thursday, a strategy promoted by the Department of Citizen and Institutional Relations to maintain and encourage channels of communication with Navarrese citizens residing abroad.

The day began with an introduction by the Director General of Communication and Institutional Relations, Pello Pellejero, who then turned the floor over to the Navarrese present through videos, explained aspects related to individual decisions in a global environment that drive, in some cases, and force, in others to settle in another country outside the Autonomous Community.

Address by Ana Ollo at the 1st Next Gathering held last week in Pamplona

This is the first occasion that Navarreses coming from, in this case, places like Euskadi, Madrid, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, China (Hong Kong), Denmark, United States, Finland, France, Morocco, United Kingdom and Russia, have gathered to lay the foundation of a flow of communication in both directions with their place of origin; both with the Government of Navarre, as well as with a productive fabric or knowledge centers located in the Autonomous Community.

To this end, the Executive has been working for more than a year conducting a survey, analyzing the available data, and opening a process of collecting contributions before preparing the draft for the Next Strategy.

In the words of Ana Ollo, “It was essential in this process to know what the citizenship is like, how you are.”  Of the 294 proposals and contributions received, 171 of them came from citizens residing abroad, 30 from families and 93 from key agents consulted to develop the strategy.

The draft of the Next Strategy, according to the minister, defines three points of action: one in communication/connection; another in retention/return; and a third in active cooperation, each of which includes a series of proposals to carry them out.

The reality of these people who have left Navarre voluntarily or due to work needs shouldn’t be “leave us indifferent to be a phenomenon that occurs throughout our environment,” she said.  “On the contrary, we believe that citizenship abroad has a tremendous value for Navarre and we are aware that we have to improve the relationship with it, activating confluences of interest that link our external citizenship with Navarre, whether or not they are willing to return of course,” she affirmed.

Links to be maintained

The effort to give visibility to this reality, “in the spirit of the Government is to generate an institutional, business, academic and social climate that takes into account these people and promote the tools to strengthen the links between Navarre and its citizenship abroad.

The event also provided a venue for the Managing Director of the Navarre employment Service, Paz Fernandez to talk about “the employment situation in Navarre: reality and trends, as well as to present the paper, “The Economy, the Company and the Work Market in Navarre,” by Eva Perujuániz, from NavarraCapital.es.

Representatives of Navarrese businesses, and the two universities, also attended along with the Administration of the Provincial Community as well as many people who have returned to Navarre.  All of these participated in a roundtable, to provide an approximation of the reality of the connection between Navarre and its citizens abroad.
