This is not a new subject, but taking a step towards its implementation is new.  The Basque Government through the Director of the Basque Community Abroad, has started a campaign to gather input and proposals about the celebration of  a “Basque Diaspora Day.”  What they require are proposals for the date to celebrate it and why.  If you have an opinion, don’t hesitate to email them by the end of the year.

Vitoria-Gasteiz.   The creation of a date on the Basque calendar to officially celebrate Basque communities abroad is a topic that is often raised and discussed at World Congresses and Basque club meetings, one that is often tabled and left unfinished.  Now the Director of the Basque Community Abroad has taken a first step, opening a process of reflection that requires input, requesting people to share which date would be appropriate to celebrate “Basque Diaspora Day,” and why.

Anyone who has an opinion on the subject, is asked to email euskaletxeak@euskadi.eus by midnight on December 31st.  Suggestions will be reviewed and a formal proposal will then be made with a specific date dedicated to “Basque Diaspora Day.”

One of the conclusions of the 6th World Congress

The basic lines of action in relation to the Basque Community abroad for the period of 2015-2019 are outlined in the conclusions of the 6th World Congress held October 7-9, 2015 in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

These are based on the motto of that Congress or “Diasporizatu,” (Diasporize), and are part of the four-year plan that emanated from this congress.

In this context, one of the ways of putting “diasporize” gradually in practice in the society is to establish “Basque Diaspora Day,” to increase the visibility of the community abroad, and celebrate the event around the world once a year, they noted.
