Euskal Etxea in Peru celebrated its Basque Week 2016 with Basque classes, pintxo-pote, the film “Loreak” and more

The Peru Basque Club said good-bye to September with a Basque Week that was full of activities, September 19-25.  The festivities began with a master Basque class, followed by the screening of the film Loreak, a wine tasting of Rioja wines, and a pintxo-pote on Thursday followed by a meal.  Following is a photo gallery of the events. 

Lima, Peru.  The Lima Peru Euskaletxea celebrated its 30th anniversary with a Basque Week that included active participation of LEGAZ (Limako Euskal Gazteria), in a special master’s Basque class.

The activities took place at the clubhouse, situated on Malecon in the Peruvian capital, and gathered several members and friends.  Among the events were a masters class in Basque, the screening of the multi-award winning film Loreak directed by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga, the first film to be nominated at the Oscars (making it to the short list for best foreign films).

In addition, Basque Week also included gastronomic and social events like the wine tasting of Rioja wines, thanks to representatives in Peru of the Rioja’s Viña Marro, as well as a pintxo-pote contest that had great atmosphere and a large selection of pintxos to enjoy.

Other Activities

The Euskaletxea has been very active lately with various initiatives, club sources told EuskalKultura.com.  These activities include:

- Weekly Basque classes taught by Xabier Gil Hernández and Victor Lopez Sanz.
- Thursday night dinners, "in hopes of gathering the entire Basque family in Lima and Peru, and open the doors to new members and friends."  
- Celebrations like Korrika that debuted in Lima in 2015, and will be held again in March (images of this event on their Facebook page, and Christmas in the Jungle (presenting children with gifts that life in the outskirts.  In 2015 they gathered 29 boxes (photos). This Christmas they will do it again.
- Celebrations like Tamborrada and Aberri Eguna.
- Participation in the Uninterrupted Reading of Classics at the Arriaga Theater in Bilbao that Basque Students have participated in this year reading Itxuraldaketa by Franz Kafka.
