The Etxepare Basque Institute has published two new grants: one, destined for activities that will disseminate the Basque culture outside the Basque Country; and the other for the translation of works done by Basque writers into languages other than Basque. The deadline to apply for the first one is two months from today. The second has two separate application periods: from today until May 16 or between the 1 and 31 of October.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  The Etxepare Institute published two new grants yesterday destined to promote the Basque culture abroad.  The first grant is to support activities and programs that contribute to the dissemination of the Basque culture outside of the traditional geographic area of the Basque language during 2012.  The goal of this aid is to support activities that in spite of being framed within the Institute’s scope are not eligible for other financial aid offered by the Etxepare Institute.

Eligible programs or activities would be those “who are considered by their quality, use or purpose, or who embody or convey cultural expressions irrespective of the commercial value that they may have.”  What is meant by “cultural expressions” is various demonstrations of individual, or group creativity, the institute clarified.  These demonstrations include, among others, expressions conveyed through words, sound, images in any medium, or by any action or object.

The deadline to apply is two months from today, April 17.

Literary Translation

The other grant announced yesterday is for literary translation of works by Basque writers.  This grant will support the following types of translations:

- The translation of works originally written and published in Basque to other languages.

-Literary works written and originally published in Spanish by authors born or residing in the Basque Autonomous Community into other languages (except into Basque).

-Short literary texts (poems, stories, short plays…) by Basque authors to be published in 2012 in magazines based outside the geographical scope of the Basque language.

In this case, the submission of applications is divided into two phases:  The first deadline is from today April 17 to May 16 and the second is from October 1-31.
