The “Excellence in Basque Studies” will be held once again as part of the summer offerings by the Etxepare Basque Institute.  Its goal is to train future Basque teachers that will take part in the Basque language and culture lectureships supported by the Institute at some 30 universities around the world.  It will be held July 8-10 in Donostia and Etxepare has now announced that it has some scholarships available to those interested in taking part.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  For the fifth year in a row, the Etxepare Basque Institute, in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country, will offer the Excellence in Basque Studies, course as part of its summer classes.  This year, it will take place from July 8-10, and will concentrate especially on the works of Mariasun Landa, prolific author of children’s and youth literature, and one of the most translated Basque authors along with Bernardo Atxaga.

The Etxepare Institute is providing scholarships for folks interested in taking the course, and in some cases, it will cover the entire cost of enrollment.  To apply, get in touch with the Institute via email: k-galartza@etxepare.eus.

The program, directed by Mari Jose Olaziregi, director for the Promotion and Diffusion of Euskera at Etxepare, will address issues such as children’s and youth literature, gender studies, reading habits in the digital age and challenges faced by a writer in a  multi-lingual society, things that Landa has dealt with for years.

In the practical seminars, more attention will be paid to Basque symbolism and tools will be provided to overcome difficulties posed by teaching Basque at the university level, along with various teaching resources.

In addition, on July 9th, there will be a literary reading at the Donostia Aquarium entitled Mariasun Landarekin solasean (Talking to Mariasun Landa) that is open to the public.  Participating at the event will be writers Bernardo Atxaa, Juan Kruz Igerabide, Patxi Zubizarreta, Miren Agur Meabe, Miguel Desclot and Fina Casadelrrey, as well as illustrators, Antton Olariaga, Elena Odriozola and Jokin Mitxelena who will draw live.  All will be accompanied by the piano music of Juantxo Zeberio.
