Even if it’s one of the newest Basque clubs in Argentina, the Basque club in Puerto Madryn, in the province of Chubut, has taken steps from its foundation until today including managing land where they will build a clubhouse.  While they await the allocation of space, members of Etorritakoengatik display ikurriñas and Basque dances at local events.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina.  Since its foundation in 2011, until today, the Etorritakoengatik Basque club in Puerto Madryn functions without its own roof, but it continues to provide activities in halls provided by other institutions.  In hopes of modifying this situation, and after a series of meetings, club president, Andres Elorriaga, with local authorities, the club has achieved reserving a local lot that will be adjudicated in the coming months.

“Besides,” Elorriaga explains, “we have also held a meeting with the Chief of Institutional Relations of the Provincial Government, with a proposal to solicit economic help for the construction of the clubhouse.  They told us about the possibility of giving us a subsidy to those ends and what requirements we will need to meet to qualify, things that we will be doing in the coming days,” the president told EuskalKultura.com.

Multicultural Meeting

Long-term projects are also a stimulus for the day to day tasks and with this goal in mind the club dancers are working throughout the year to represent the Basque community at local events.  In 2014, they were also invited to participate in the Multicultural Meeting that took place as part of the Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity.  The 8th edition took place on October 11 and 12 at School #728 “Alfonsina Storni,” and was attended by various foreign communities that live together in the city.

In regards to the Basques, they not only put on a show but also provided typical dishes on the patio.  The club sukaldaris took advantage of this opportunity to show-off a variety of pintxos.

In the coming weeks, Etorritakoengatik will organize an end-of-year dinner along with members and friends of the institution.  They are also considering participating in the Basque gastronomic festival organized by Hiru Erreka and the Pampa Vasca in San Francisco de Bellocq and the 2015 San Sebastian Week in Necochea.
