Beginning today, the Eloise Garmendia Basque Chair in Boise will analyze aspects of the history of Basque art

Boise, Idaho. The Eloise Bieter Garmendia Chair, at the Basque Studies Program at Boise State University, is developing a program, beginning today through April 25th that includes seminars, conferences and post-graduate activities to analyze various aspects of Basque art.  These will be taught by Dr. Ismael Manterola (Zumaia, 1966) Art History Professor at the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country.

Manterola will be a guest lecturer in three classes, The Study of History covering “History versus Stories: James Elkins’ new History of Art.  How Memory Studies, Gender Studies, Post-colonial Studies have Changed the Ways of Making History; the Basque Case.” In Span Today, he will cover “The Book of the Memory in Spain: a Case Study of the Basque Country,” this will be in Spanish and in Basque Culture, he will talk about “History and Memory in Basque Art: Transmission of Values in Basque Art: I Transmission of Values in Basque Art II. Memories of Forgetting: a Case Study.”

Manterola will also give a public talk on the University campus.  The talk will treat themes covered in the post-doc classes; “Transmission of Values in Basque Modern Art” will be on Friday, April 24th at 6pm.

The Eloise Garmendia Bieter Chair was officially inaugurated in 2015, with the signing of an agreement between the Etxepare Basque Institute and Boise State University. The Chair invites a visiting professor annually to teach post-graduate students, in hopes of increasing studies and research on issues related to Basque language and Basque culture.  Eloise Garmendia was an active member of the Basque community of Boise.  Together with her husband Pat Bieter, she raised a family of five children all of whom are professionals and fluent Basque speakers.  Each works in different areas of American life ranging from teaching, and law, to politics and the judiciary.
