From February 8-18, ZinemaldiaCat, the Basque Film Festival in Catalonia will provide fans a panorama of the most recent Basque production in the 7th art.  The festival, that is part of the Catalonia Film Festivals, will take place again in the Girona Cinemas, organized by the Barcelona Euskal Etxea.  Nine titles are part of this year’s official collection with works like Handia or Errementari in fiction, or the documentaries, Converso or Volar.

Barcelona, Catalonia.   From a Galaxy far away comes this, the 13th edition of Zinemaldia.Cat, the Basque film festival in Catalonia that is organized annually by the Barcelona Euskal Etxea Cultural Center.  They are doing so with proposals coming from far away and with exclusive debuts in Catalonia, according to organizers.

This event is part of the Catalonia Film Festivals, and was created to break issues and showcase Basque cinematic production in Catalonia.

The programming of the official selections this year includes nine films, many of which will debut in Catalonia and that in some cases have only been seen at the Donostia Film Festival.  All of these can be seen in Girona Cinemas.  Among these is the winner of 10 Goya Awards, Handia or Errementari that will debut at the festival, directed by Paul Urkijo and produced by Alex de la Iglesia.  In the documentary section, there will be films that will surprise the public like Converso that has also been awarded or Volar.

The nine competing films (5 documentaries and 4 fiction films) are vying for the Golden Txapelas.  The festivals awards are: the Gold Txapela for the best fiction film, the Gold Txapela for the best documentary, and the Gold Azkue Foundation Txapela for the best film in Euskera.  The jury who is charged with making this difficult decision is comprised of people who are renowned in the world of Catalan film like actress, Bruna Cusi, and actor Lluis Marques, critic Blai Morell, Barbara Destefanis, executive producer of the Barcelona Sport Festival and the director of DocsBarcelona, Joan Gonzalez.

The Euskal Etxea is also committed to providing small discoveries to the Catalan pubic.  In this way, this year they will once again host AlterZinemaldia that includes a cooking workshop on the big screen, among other activities.  Kimuak will also be present, as every year and will allow spectators to see new directors and appreciate the work of other directors that they may already know from the Filmoteca Vasca.
