The 19th edition of Korrika, the race in favor of the Basque language, will arrive for the first time in Cancun, thanks to local euskaltzales.  The event will have a very special character, as organizers have explained to EuskalKultura.com, the goal is to introduce and experience Euskera as well as support the recuperation and the social visibility of the Mayan language.

Cancun, Mexico.  The Mexican city of Cancun will welcome Korrika 19 on March 21st, the race in favor of adults learning Basque and the AEK euskaltegis.  In reality, the race will take place in Euskal Herria, but there are more and more groups in the Diaspora who are organizing parallel activities. This year, Basques in Cancun have decided to hold an event for the first time.

It will take place on March 21 at the Malecon Tajamar, starting at 4pm.  The goal is “to combine this symbolic language with the local language, Mayan” as Alejandro Eguia-Lis told EuskalKultura.com.  “We are organizing different people and interested communities in cultural and linguistic diversity in our country like the Tzok’in Cultural Project, the University Institute Kukulcan, Alzaga Productions, the Collective Collective – a group of poets that include Mayan writers among them – Amnesty International Cancun, that has seen an opportunity in Korrika to make people aware of the rights of native peoples to their culture.”

Cancun is located on the Yucatan peninsula and its original inhabitants were Maya.  Due to conditions imposed by globalization, the Mayan language is endangered and has prompted this initiative for its defense; rescue, strengthening and standardization which experiences lived elsewhere have also resorted to.
