For the second year in a row, the Pedro Goyena Library opens its doors to the Basque community to carry out a series of talks that will address historic questions about Euskal Herria from very diverse perspectives.  The first talk of this year took place last Friday, by Professor Luis Luquez, who talked about the arrival of Basques to Newfoundland.

Quilmes, Argentina.  The Pedro Goyena Library in Quilmes will host a series of talks throughout the year on Basque culture.  The proposal offers lectures on historic aspects of the Basque Country, from specialists coming from different areas.  The talks will take place on the last Friday of the month at 7pm, and will follow the program below:

-Friday, April 24, Basque Geology (Guillermo Villate)
-Friday May 28, The navigation in Euskal Herria, part one (Ariel Ghizzardi)
-Friday June 26, The navigation in Euskal Herria, part two (Ariel Ghizzardi and Luis Lúquez)
-(Julio, winter vacation, not talk planned)
-Friday 28 August, Iparralde (Carlos Irisarri)
-Friday 25 September, witchcraft and cuisine of the middle ages (Charito Naya and Marité Etxegoyen)
-Friday 30 October, 'Uncivil' war of 1936 (Luis Lúquez)
-Friday 27 November, Basque in Quilmes (Chalo Agnelli)

The first of these talks of 2015 took place on last Friday March 27, presented by Luis Luquez, coordinator of the activity.  In his words, “the subject matter has to do with the presence of Basque whalers on the island of Newfoundland before the arrival of Christopher Columbus; and in relation to this, the whaling industry, slaughter, oil, grease and its derivatives.  Of course, it is material for discussion and in fact the audience was intervening throughout the talk.  The majority of the information was extracted from historic documentation from the Museum in Quebec.  We also talked about Basque feudalism, sponsoring the expeditions, and the large fortunes of the navigators who eventually came to America, as well as the acquisition of large Argentine strongholds,” Luquez explained.

After the talk, everyone present had dinner together.

The next talk will be on April 24 at the Pedro Goyena Library in Quilmes, located on San Luis Street 948.
