A talk on Basque nutrition, the Rauch Euskal Etxea’s contribution to the “National Bird Festival”

Thanks to Maite Salsamendi, with a degree in Food Technology, the Gure Txoko Basque Club and the Basque culture was present at the 2016 edition of the “National Festival of Birds,” in Rauch, in the province of Buenos Aires.  After the talk, the audience was invited to share some homemade rice pudding.  

Rauch, Argentina.  The City of Rauch held another edition of the “National Festival of Birds,” marking its 19th edition with a large program of activities for the entire community.

The festival began on September 3, and concluded on Sunday the 11th, and once again included the participation the local Euskal Etxea, this year represented by Maite Salsamendi who has a degree in Food Technology.  Her talk entitled, “Basque Nutrition, Tradition of Modernism?” where Salsamendi referred to the changes that have become evident in Basque cooking with the passing of time.  As she told EuskalKultura.com, “The talk discusses Basque food based on traditional foods, like bread, milk and derivatives, meat, fruit and vegetables, their production processes and the technological changes that have taken place through history.  It is based on the work that she carried out to get her degree as a Specialist in Basque Studies at the University of the Basque Country.”

After her talk, everyone present was invited to try some homemade rice pudding prepared for the occasion by another member of the Euskal Etxea, Silvia Conte.

Maite Salsamendi was a dantzari for years and then she taught dance at Gure Txokoa.  Currently, she is part of the club and member of the board of directors.  Salsamendi has a degree in Food Technology, and is a graduate of the UNICEN-Universidad del Centro, and Specialist in Basque Studies a post-doc carried out at the University of the Basque Country.
