Bilbao, Bizkaia. A Tree of Gernika will be planted this Sunday, May 26th in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, in the Jonsered Gardens that have a botanical heritage dating back to the year 1800, and that are today an example of cutting-edge ecological cultivation and social responsibility. The Bizkaian Basque Goverment have donated the sapling as a tribute to the city in gratitude for hosting Lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre in 1941, and facilitating his departure, and that of his family, to America fleeing from the Nazis. Accompanying the city authorities will be the Garaizarko Matsorriak Choir from Bilbao who will perform Basque songs.
The event will begin at 3pm with a presentation by Ingmar Söhrman, Professor of the University of Gothenburg, about the famous painting “Guernica,” painted by Picasso, and the importance of the Tree of Gernika as a symbol of peace. The event is open to the public and the event will conclude at 5pm after planting the sapling in the Herrgårdsparken (Jonsered Gardens).
The Garaizarko Matsorriak Choir will also perform a concert the next day with local choirs Stockholms Manskör and Sangsällskapet DS at the Sankt Erik of Stockholm Church, again performing Basque songs as well as pieces by Verdi, Gounod and Josephson. The choir’s director is Miren Zubieta, who will perform along with the director of Stockhoms Manskör "Kontzertua Re menorren" by Luis Aranburu, for txistu and piano. The choir will then travel to Upsala, the site of the oldest university in the country where they will perform another concert before returning to Bilbao on Saturday.
